School Musicals - Where to Find Them
School Musicals
Information
I teach drama in a very conservative district, so it is often difficult to have sufficient money or resources, not to
talk about community support. You see, people here don't seem to
recognize the importance of supplementary activities. In some ways, it is a great community for
education. People stress core educational ideals, and it is good. We reach some of the best
mathematics scores in the state, and our reading scores are well above average as well. But when we want to get school
musicals, however, things can get pretty tough. Often, we will have to have a school fund raiser just to hold a school play. Parents will
on occasion make their children drop out to spend more time studying, and those who do stay are not
all the time as dedicated as they should be. It truly is a shame, because schoolmusicals are a really valuable part of education in my opinion. Learning core subjects is great,
but there is more to school than that. School is a time when students learn to feel at ease. Public speaking is a part of this. By
acquiring some school drama experience, scholars develop abilities like
collaboration, as well as having the possibility to really shine in front of their friends, family, and community.
School Musicals Advice
This year, we wanted to create a really great schoolmusical. We wanted to create something that
the entiry community would back up. As a result, instead of organizing the usual
school Broadway musicals, we had a contest. All the scholars were invited to submit school musicals and plays to the
drama branch. The high school musical was in fact composed by one of the high school students! I worked
with the English department, and they allowed their students the option to write school plays
instead of essays. Although many of the students chose to try this, thinking it would be an simple task, they
were very astonished. They learned how difficult it is to write a script! What we ended up with was one of the finest school musicals we ever had. Several students in collaboration wrote it, and it was quite a work of art. They also entered it in some national writing competitions.
Parents were really interested now that I had success in integrating the drama production with education. It
actually got the community behind us. Somehow, I believe our school will have more public support of our drama
department from now on!
